A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith

This is a wonderful book–one of the best books at describing everyday life that I have ever read. I got a thorough picture of life growing up in poverty in Brooklyn in the early 20th century. While in some ways not much in the way of a traditional plot happens (with rising action and climax, etc.), the book doesn’t need it: the story of Francie Nolan is compelling in and of itself–not to mention all the supporting characters.

4 out of 5 stars
